Christchurch fire crews plan to hit hard the blaze burning in the Port Hills, before winds pick up from around lunchtime

Christchurch fire crews plan to hit hard the blaze burning in the Port Hills, before winds pick up from around lunchtime

That includes a coordinated air attack using 13 helicopters and fixed wing aircraft - to assist the 80 firefighters on the ground.

A state of emergency remains in place for Christchurch City, including Banks Peninsula, and the Selwyn District, with about 80 properties evacuated.

    No structures have been lost.

Evacuation centres have been set up at Halswell Community Centre and Lincoln Community Centre.

Fire and Emergency region manager Brad Mosby says they understand the effect this has on the community.

He says they take a measured approach when assessing whether evacuations are necessary .. and they don't take it lightly.
