Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has signalled more rates rises in the coming years

His proposal for the city's 10-year budget will go to a council budget workshop this week, and promises significant financial restraint.

The cost-cutting measures will include likely council job losses, scrapped cycle lanes and defunding earthquake strengthening works.

Herald reporter Tom Dillane says the mayor is trying to provide reassurance that with continued restraint, rates increases will reduce to the rate of inflation - or near inflation.

The budget will be adopted in June after consultation.
