Twenty-three crews of firefighters have spent the night tackling the 630 hectare uncontained fire on Christchurch's Port Hills

Twenty-three crews of firefighters have spent the night tackling the 630 hectare uncontained fire on Christchurch's Port Hills

Fire and Emergency Incident Controller Stephen Butler says they've been working on structure protection, and strengthening containment lines around the blaze.

One home appears to have been destroyed by the blaze, and officials will be providing support to the resident.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.

Cordons have been shifted, allowing some residents to return home, while others have spent a second night out of their homes.

Evacuees who need managed access to their properties can discuss their situation with officials at the community hub at the bottom of Worsleys Road, from 8am.
