A local state of emergency in Christchurch is continuing until further notice -- as firefighters battle a huge blaze at the Port Hills

A local state of emergency in Christchurch is continuing until further notice -- as firefighters battle a huge blaze at the Port Hills

Yesterday, sixteen crews, worked with diggers and a bulldozer to create a 50 metre edge to the fire's 24 kilometre perimeter.

Up to seven helicopters were fighting the blaze from the air.

Drones were used last night to identify hotspots to work on today.

The fire's contained, but not out.

Christchurch City Council local controller Neville Riley says the state of emergency will be considered on a daily basis.

He says the declaration allows them to evacuate people from homes if necessary, and close roads and areas to the public.
