Seven people have died over the Easter break, four of which occurred following a three vehicle crash near Twizel on Saturday.
A nurse who was passing through, has described horrific scenes performing CPR on one of the victims.
Brake road safety charity founder Caroline Perry says the roads are busier with people heading home from Easter, and drivers need to stay focused.
She says people should still leave plenty of time, ensure everyone is wearing a seat belt, keep below speed limits and drive to the conditions.
