| | | PC World - 24 May (PC World)The major Windows 11 update for 2024 is now available for you to try out — but unless you have an unreleased Windows Copilot+ PC, you won’t be able to receive the full benefits.
Microsoft representatives told me that all Windows Copilot+ PCs will ship with Windows 11 24H2, which will likely be called the Windows 11 2024 Update — unless, of course, Microsoft cobrands it as a Copilot+ release. Meanwhile, Microsoft has put Windows 11 24H2 (Build 26100.712) into the Release Preview Channel, Microsoft said in a blog post.
Normally, that’s a sure sign that the release will debut soon. But Microsoft just politely laid any doubt to rest, stating that the company is making the “this year’s annual feature update” available to preview “ahead of general availability later this calendar year.”
The release will be an interesting one, given that you really can try out just a handful of the new features:
Wi-Fi 7 support: Surprisingly, though Wi-Fi 7 routers are available, W-iFi 7 is not officially supported in Windows 11. Microsoft began testing it in February with Build 26063.

HDR Backgrounds: With Build 23516, Microsoft began adding support for HDR desktop backgrounds. So you have an image of the sun blazing through a gap in the clouds, it should render more correctly. Note that this is different than AutoHDR in Windows 11. Recently, VESA began taking action to help make cheaper HDR displays look better, too.
Voice clarity: In January, Microsoft announced AI-enhanced noise cancellation within Windows, known as “voice clarity“. Basically, this is an under-the-hood improvement which promises to significantly improve the ability of apps to filter out background noise and emphasize your voice instead.
Sudo for Windows: The “superuser do” command (sudo) is being added to Windows. Typically geared at developers working within a console window, this basically allows a user to override whatever protections are in place, like circumventing administrator restrictions.
Smaller features are also being added for everyone: the ability to compress files using 7-ZIP and TAR (and not just ZIP), a scrollable view of the quick settings flyout on the taskbar, and better connectivity for Bluetooth Low Energy devices.

But this release will also bring to the world the AI features Microsoft showed at its Build conference in Seattle this week. They include Recall, the somewhat controversial PC smart search tool that helps find lost details by taking snapshots of your PC; the Microsoft Paint Cocreator; Automatic Super Resolution, and more.
Unfortunately, all of those features require the NPU that’s inside a Copilot+ PC, Microsoft says. Those won’t ship until June 18, which means that that’s the first date that the general public will have a chance to try these features out, and only if you a new laptop with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip inside.
Microsoft also confirmed that Copilot will be migrated to the Windows desktop as an app. The first region to try it out will be the European Economic Area, including the European Union.
How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update
Right now, you have to be enrolled inside the Windows Insider Program, specifically the Release Preview Channel. Visit the Windows Update section of the Windows Settings (Settings > Windows Update) and select the optional Windows 11 24H2 update if it’s available.
Microsoft provides an example, above.

| | | PC World - 24 May (PC World)Today’s antivirus programs are full security suites packed with extra features. Many of the best antivirus programs often include a built-in password manager. That makes sense, as a password manager is an essential online security tool.
You don’t need a password manager built into your antivirus suite — especially if you already have a password manager you prefer. But it can be convenient — especially for people who may not already use a password manager.
Do you need a password manager?
A password manager is an essential tool you should be using to keep your accounts safe. It’s important to use strong, unique passwords everywhere. This will help protect your accounts when services you use are breached and your passwords leak — something that unfortunately happens often. If you reuse the same password everywhere, your accounts are vulnerable.
A password manager can generate strong, unique passwords for you and automatically fill them in while you browse. It’s more secure and more convenient. If you don’t already use one, you absolutely should.
What’s the advantage of a bundled password manager?
Since modern antivirus tools are full-featured security suites that increasingly aim to bundle everything you need for online security, it’s no surprise that they include password managers. For example, Norton 360 Deluxe includes the Norton Password Manager.
For people who don’t use a password manager already, having their antivirus program nudge them towards a password manager is a big improvement. Everything is in one place and on one convenient security dashboard. You don’t have to hunt down a bunch of separate security tools.

In theory, a password manager bundled with your antivirus could also save you money. You wouldn’t have to pay separate subscription fees for a password manager and an antivirus tool.
However, the bundled Norton Password Manager is also available for free to everyone. You can even use it if you don’t pay for Norton 360. We’re also big fans of Bitwarden, which offers a capable free plan. And you can also use the password manager built into Google Chrome or your web browser of choice. You can get a good password manager without spending any money at all.
What’s the downside of a bundled password manager?
If you start using a password manager because it’s bundled with your antivirus suite, that’s a win for your online security. However, a password manager built into your antivirus often isn’t the best solution.
Bundled antivirus password managers like Norton Password Manager are on the simple side. They’ll get the job done, but our favorite password managers have extra features and more polished interfaces. For example, password managers like 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane now support passkeys for signing into your online accounts. Norton hasn’t added support for this yet.

You’ll have to install a browser extension to use your antivirus’s password manager, so there’s about as much setup as there is with any other password manager. You could also just install another password manager’s browser extension or even use the built-in password manager in your browser. The antivirus suite nudges you towards its password manager on its convenient dashboard, but otherwise you’re not getting a lot of extra integration.
Any good password manager is better than no password manager
You don’t need a password manager as part of your antivirus software. But security experts do think you need a password manager.
It will be convenient for many people — especially less technically inclined PC users — to have “everything in one place” and use something like Norton Password Manager with Norton 360 antivirus. If they weren’t going to use a password manager but their antivirus suite pushed them to do so, that’s a win.
On the other hand, you’ll probably have a better, more polished experience with a dedicated password manager like one of our favorite password managers. And if you’re just looking for something that’s easy and integrated with the applications you use, you can try your web browser’s built-in password manager.
Norton 360 Deluxe
Read our review
There are lots of excellent free password managers you can choose from, too. We called Norton’s password manager “simple but good” in our review of Norton 360 Deluxe, the best overall security suite we’ve reviewed. It’s a fine option — but Norton offers its password manager free to everyone. You can use Norton Password Manager even if you don’t pay for a Norton subscription.
Still, it’s hard to go wrong with any solid password manager. The password managers bundled with the best antivirus programs are certainly fine. If you’re happy with them, that’s great. But you don’t need to focus on the password manager when you’re picking the best antivirus program for your needs.

| | | PC World - 23 May (PC World)I’m going to share a personal dilemma: That is, the trend towards ultralight mice hasn’t done me and my big hand any favors.
Why so? In the quest to achieve the lightest possible weight for esports players, two things have happened: A whole bunch of small, lightweight gaming mice that are just too short for my hands have flooded the market; and, the large-sized mice that do fit me are mostly made heavier than I would like and don’t actually qualify as “ultralight’ (so below 80 grams, or 2.8 ounces)
Alas, if I’m not mistaken, there seems to be an unspoken agreement in the gaming hardware industry that big-handed players should get by with heavier gaming mice, since they’ve obviously got bigger muscles to wield them, wink wink.
Well, I’ve got news for everybody — that stereotype doesn’t apply to this cowboy! No, unfortunately these gigantic mitts of mine don’t come with matching-sized stumps.
In fact, although I can open pickle jars better than perhaps anyone I know, my guns rarely bathe in the fluorescent lights of my local gym. Downing extra portions of spinach at dinnertime sadly doesn’t seem to inflate them much either…
That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s a good way to highlight my dilemma. It’s not an exaggeration to say that after a whole day of swiping and flicking with a gaming mouse large enough to fit my hand, something like the Logitech G 502X, I often have a sore wrist, sore shoulder, and sometimes even a sore arm.
High-tech materials like the lightweight nylon on the Asus ROG Harpe Ace Aim Lab Edition exist, so why not use them on larger mice?

The Logitech G 502X is a stellar mouse, so I’m not dissing it. But at 3.1 ounces (89 grams) and after 8 hours gaming, it can be a little brutal on my body.
But it’s not just getting RSI that gets me down, it’s also about the performance benefits I’m missing out on using heavier mice, too. There’s no doubt that my mouse performance is as good as it gets when I use an ultralight mouse.
With a mouse that weighs just 2.2 ounces (63 grams) or under, for example, I can keep my crosshair level at the top of foes for the whole game in Valorant, shoeing me in for more hits where they matter the most.
In CounterStrike 2, an ultralight mouse makes it oh so easy to spin around and take down baddies with just a simple flick and click.
So granted all that, if I’m going to have a proper go at hitting the leaderboards — hefty gauntlets and all — I’ll be needing, no I’ll be demanding something that feels feathery in my grip! Would it be too much to ask if that feathery-gripped mouse also didn’t make my fingers cramp up because it’s just way too small?

Before you say, “It’s not possible, larger mice are naturally going to be heavier than smaller mice,” need I remind you of the extreme lightweight materials gaming mice are made from these days?
I was blown away when I reviewed the Asus ROG Harpe Ace Aim Lab Edition that weighs just 1.9 ounces (54 grams). Indeed, it feels like it’s made of plastic, but it’s actually comprised of a lightweight Nylon, which is even lighter than plastic — amazing? I know!
Then there’s mice like the Keychron M3 mini 4K Metal Edition; admittedly it’s not a big mouse, but if Keychron can make it out of sparkly lightweight magnesium and also hit a sweet weight of just 2.25 ounces (64 grams), surely, they can make something similar for my gigantic paw?
Oh man, but I can just dream… Mind you, there are some mice that come awfully close to hitting everything on my wish list, that I’m always keen to play with whenever I get the chance.
Keychron does have the M6 Wireless. It weighs just 2.75 ounces (78 grams) and fills up my whole palm. It also has an ergonomic thumb rest, so I can just stretch out and enjoy the ride.
I’m also a big fan of the 2-ounce (60 gram) Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2. Being a symmetrical five button FPS mouse, it’s not the broadest, but it does have good length to it so that any finger overhang I get at the front is barely noticeable.
Here’s hoping that in the near future we see more bigger and lighter mice just like these ones that can accommodate my ginormous grip. Until then, I’ll keep paying my gym membership, just in case.
