PrimePort Timaru is taking onboard safety improvements after a critical report into a crash between a cruise ship and a cement ship two years ago
11 April 2019
The Seabourn Encore was moored at the Port of Timaru in 2017, when winds pushed the ship away from the wharf - and its mooring line failed swinging it across the harbour.
Nobody was injured - but there was damage to the Seabourn Encore's wharf and the hulls of both ships.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission found the port company did not know enough about the safe working loads of the bollards on the wharf - and the port's mooring procedures were not strictly followed.
PrimePort CEO Phil Melhopt says their focus is on safety and improvement.
He says port infrastructure, technology and procedures have been significantly updated and the work is ongoing.
