MetService has issued a heat alert for some centres, as much of New Zealand experiences prolonged periods of hotter-than-average temperatures, in the late 20s and early 30s.
Lower Hutt was the warmest centre this afternoon, on 32.3C, pipping Invercargill on 32.2C and Otago's Miller's Flat on 31.9C.
Invercargill's temperature is its second hottest January day since records began in 1948.
