A search is underway for two people missing in overdue boat off the Whangarei coast

About 9pm Police were alerted that two people were two hours overdue from returning from their fishing trip back to Pataua South.

A spokesperson says a search commenced immediately involving Search and Rescue, Coastguard and the Police Eagle helicopter.

They say searchers were stood down about 4am, and the search resumed about 8am today.

Vessels in the Pataua Harbour and Ngu-ngu-ru Bay area have been asked to report any sightings of the vessel, described as a 17-foot runabout.
