West Coasters are waking up after a night of heavy rain

A local state of emergency was declared for Westland yesterday.

State Highway 6 from Ross to Makarora remains shut - the Transport Agency is out assessing road conditions this morning.

Emergency operations staff from the Westland District have worked through the night monitoring rain and river levels.

Red and orange warnings are in place for the Westland, Buller, and Grey districts, central inland South Island this morning.
