The Newcastle Knights playmaker will start at five-eighth for the Maori when they face the Indigenous All Stars, partnering with the Melbourne Storm's Jahrome Hughes in the halves.
Ponga's expected to wear the six jersey for the Knights too, after predominantly being a fullback in his career so far.
Ponga had a taste of the position against the Panthers late last season and feels comfortable.
He says he's glad he can play standoff on Friday to get the experience in the position, but he's also trained there so isn't too nervous about it.
Kick off from Melbourne is at 10pm.
