A 1.2-billion-dollar tunnel is going to be built in Auckland ... for wastewater
14 March 2019
The 13-kilometre tunnel will become New Zealand's longest tunnel and span five-metres in diameter.
Watercare Services is officially signing the construction contract today.
Chief executive Raveen Jaduram says current piping means much of central Auckland's rain water is mixed with wastewater.
He says the situation is unique to the area, because more modern suburbs - both south and north of the city - have separate pipes.
Jaduram says construction is expected to begin next year, lasting until 2025.
