Ratepayers will be the ones footing the bill for damage to Ngaruawahia's cenotaph
24 April 2019
A two-metre long slab of stone at Ngaruawahia's cenotaph has been damaged, two bronze wreaths have been stolen and the plaque ripped off.
Waikato District Council's Megan May says the damage is too bad to be properly fixed before tomorrow.
She says they won't know how much it will cost until the stonemason has tried to source the stone - but expects it won't be cheap.
The Council and local RSA are working with Police to track down the person responsible.
However the site will today be tidied and the plaque temporarily reinstated in time for tomorrow morning's Anzac Day service.
