Leaders from across Northern Ireland's political divide sat side by side at the service in Belfast.
McKee was remembered as a "talented and fearless young woman" who broke down barriers.
Catholic priest Father Martin Magill received a standing ovation for his powerful address, where he praised the different sides for coming together.
But he questioned why it had taken the death of a 29-year-old woman, with her whole life in front of her, for that to happen.
The New IRA has admitted one of its members shot McKee, and has apologised.
