Rain struck five hours ago and the umpires have confirmed the inevitable.
The teams will return for a reserve day which is expected to be overcast but dry.
New Zealand are 211 for five with 23 balls remaining after deciding to bat in tricky conditions both on the pitch and in the air.
Indian pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvi Kumar restricted them with minimal width in the opening powerplay as they limped to 27 for one.
Kane Williamson resurrected the innings with 67 and Ross Taylor is 67 not out.
