The Ruapehu District Council says heavy rainfall over the past three days has the town's treatment plant running at capacity.
It's issued a precautionary water safety notice for people to boil their water or use bottled water for drinking.
Environmental manager Anne-Marie Westcott says they require three consecutive days of negative test results before the boil water notice can be lifted.
She says with more bad weather forecast, that might not be until next week.
