Lochore captained the All Blacks in 18 tests, before going on to coach the side to the 1987 World Cup crown and then held managerial and selector roles.
He also was largely present in rugby communities around the country and has had a Heartland Championship trophy named after him since 2006.
Former All Blacks coach John Hart believes Lochore's legacy cannot be understated.
He says Lochore's mana, respect and contribution went from the 60s through to the modern era and there's very few people who will have that impact on any sport.
