Fulton's in Sri Lanka for the test series, his first outing with the team since taking over from Craig McMillan.
The 40-year-old last played for New Zealand in 2014 alongside six incumbents, as well as working alongside Gary Stead with Canterbury.
Fulton says knowing a lot of the team helps.
The first test begins on Wednesday after the warm-up was washed out without New Zealand getting a bat.
