Southerners could be in for a shaky week as aftershocks of last night's quake rock Fiordland

Geonet say almost seven thousand people reported feeling the 5.5 magnitude quake - centred 15 kilometres north of Milford Sound.

Seismologist John Ristau says with a quake this size - aftershocks can be expected for up to a week.

But he says none of them should reach more than magnitude 4.5.
