Perth will host the NRL nines when it returns to the pre-season calendar next year

Perth will host the NRL nines when it returns to the pre-season calendar next year

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the city will pip Newcastle and Melbourne's bids to stage the return of the abbreviated version of the game.

But rather than utilising the new multi-purpose Optus Stadium, the competition will be held at the football ground used by the Perth Glory.

The Nines kicked off in Auckland five years ago and initially attracted large crowds before interest began to dwindle.
