The man has been granted interim name suppression, and is charged with assaulting a child.
Police were called by ambulance staff about 8.30 last night.
The baby died at the scene and a homicide investigation is underway.
Police aren't ruling out further charges, and the man's been remanded in custody until another court appearance on September 3.
Police say it's the sixth homicide of a child under 10 this year.
