Stephen Williams has pleaded guilty to attempted murder at Rimutaka Prison in July, after throwing boiling water on an inmate and stabbing the person several times.
Williams is serving a life sentence for killing Wairarapa schoolgirl Coral Burrows in 2003.
He was sentenced to preventive detention after an attempted murder of another prisoner in 2016.
The Crown says Williams is making it clear he wants to stay in prison, and describes his offending as "unusual, significant and dangerous".
Williams will be moved to a high security prison in Auckland.
