Smith missed the third test loss with concussion, but returned for the fourth with a man-of-the-match aggregate of 293 runs at Old Trafford.
His 671 runs in the series are 217 more than Ben Stokes in second, who has played all the tests.
Paine says Smith was "handy" in the 185-run win, which sees the visitors 2-1 up with a test to play.
