Rolleston prisoners have built about 80 state houses for Christchurch in the past six-years, with 100 more in the next five-years.
Some are gaining National Certificate qualifications in carpentry, painting and plastering.
One prisoner on the scheme says he's also learning how to manage time, work to a good standard and be accountable.
He hoping it'll get him a job once he's out.
The man says jail can be negative, but prisoner dynamics change when everyone gets out and works.
