Mixed responses to new figures on anti-depressant medication use

Mixed responses to new figures on anti-depressant medication use

The rate of prescriptions of anti-depressant medication to teenagers has nearly doubled in less than a decade.

In a nine-year period, close on 1.35 million scripts were issued to people aged 24 and under.

Clinical psychologist Sarah Hetrick says it may indicate access to care has improved, but prescribing medications has risks.

She says one of the concerns is an increase in suicidal thinking - but clinicians are well aware of their obligations.
