The lead-up to the opening ODI was dominated by the debate around head coach Gary Stead taking a planned break during the series amid a run of eight defeats.
But that mattered little to the under-siege Black Caps as they reeled off their highest successful run chase in ODI history, running down 348 to win in Hamilton.
Ross Taylor led the innings with 109, while Henry Nicholls and captain Tom Latham made rich contributions with scores well over 50.
Taylor says the one day squad enjoyed being back together.
