Low HIV infections in drug users, point to needle exchange success

Low HIV infections in drug users, point to needle exchange success

A new study shows from 1996 to 2018 New Zealand averaged just one HIV diagnosis per year, for individuals who inject drugs.

Needle exchanges provide equipment for injecting drug users to reduce the transmission of diseases.

Co-author Geoff Noller says in places like the US that don't have consistent nationwide programmes, HIV rates are significantly higher.

He says the results show needle exchanges work.
