Agriculture Minister Damien O'Connor has heeded calls to classify the impacts of drought as an adverse event.
It unlocks an extra 80-thousand dollars to speed up the recovery of farming and horticultural businesses, including one-on-one support for farmers.
Waikato Primary Industries Adverse Event chairman and Ohinewai farmer Neil Bateup says it's been a long time coming.
He says it's recognition of just how difficult it is out there for them.
Earlier this month, the Minister announced a drought classification in North Auckland and Northland.
