Sam Cane was this week appointed as the side's new skipper, replacing Kieran Read.
But Cane was overlooked for the side's last big test, the loss to England in Yokohama with then coach Steve Hansen preferring Scott Barrett at six and Ardie Savea at seven.
Cane says being told he was coming off the bench was tough.
