Flight NZ5330 from Christchurch to Wellington landed safely around 8.00am after the pilots were alerted to what was going on.
Air New Zealand says passengers disembarked as normal.
Emergency services had been called as a precaution.
The ATR aircraft had been due to fly on to Napier, but is now being checked following the incident.
