Hundreds of thousands of people in Japan's south-west have been urged to move to safety because of severe flooding and landslides caused by torrential rain, expected to continue through the weekend

Hundreds of thousands of people in Japan's south-west have been urged to move to safety because of severe flooding and landslides caused by torrential rain, expected to continue through the weekend

Authorities in Kuma-moto and Kago-shima provinces on Kyushu have ordered more than 200,000 people to leave their homes and seek refuge.

Aerial images on Japanese television showed murky water covering homes, streets, cars and parts of a bridge.

The heavy downpours saw the Kuma river in Kumamoto burst its bank, leading to severe flooding.
