Haami Hanara fled from a Youth Justice facility in South Auckland on Saturday night, and hasn't been found.
The 16-year-old was jailed for life last February for the murder of Flaxmere man Kelly Donner in March 2018.
Police say Hanara has friends and family in Counties Manukau, Hamilton, Flaxmere, Hastings, Whakatane and Whanganui.
They say the teenager is considered dangerous and shouldn't be approached.
Oranga Tamariki manages the facility where Harana was being held, but isn't commenting on how he managed to flee.
