Twenty-one people were killed by the eruption and 26 were injured.
Scientists will next week begin a nine day voyage around the island to map the area and survey changes.
Marine geologist Joshu Mountjoy says the work will show how much sediment was dislodged and where it's gone.
Water samples will also be taken to measure methane and carbon dioxide gas levels, which will help detect the presence of underwater seeps linked to volcanic activity.
