The magnitude 5.2 quake struck 120 kilometres north-east of Whangamata at 3:47 this morning.
It was just five kilometres deep and more than two and a half thousand people reported feeling it from the Bay of Plenty up to Auckland.
Geonet says the aftershocks have been smaller - and most people wouldn't have felt those.
