    Two of cycling's three grand tours are running simultaneously


    The Vuelta a Espana has started overnight and the Giro d'Italia has powered through its 16th stage.

    Defending champion Primoz Roglic won the opening stage in Spain to don the red jersey, with Kiwi teammate George Bennett ninth.

    Joao Almeida has retained the leader's pink jersey for a 14th consecutive day in Italy.

    Bahrain McLaren's Jan Tratnik took out the 229 kilometre mountainous stage 16, spurred on by the sight of his girlfriend in the last 500 metres as the peloton loomed.
