ASB says highly leveraged investors rushing in to buy houses are contributing to an unexpected housing boom

In April the bank forecast a six percent drop in national house prices this year.

But it's now expecting house prices to rise 12 per cent by June next year.

Senior economist Mike Jones says the number of investors is growing.

He says it has nearly doubled in the past year.
