New Zealand's first electric plane is being launched today at Christchurch Airport
30 October 2020
The plane is a battery-electric two-seat light sport aircraft, built by Slovenian aircraft company Pipistrel .
ElectricAir founder Gary Freedman brought the plane to Christchurch, and says New Zealand is the ideal location to operate electric aircraft.
He says that's because New Zealand has one of the highest rates of short-haul flights per person, and an electricity grid powered from predominantly renewable sources.
It will be launched at an event at Christchurch airport this morning.
