The world number one has a four shot advantage from three golfers at 16-under par after 54 holes.
He says the conditions mean he can't just sit back and play safe.
If Johnson goes on to win he will be just the second player ranked number one in the world to win at Augusta this millennium.
Tiger Woods in 2001 is the last time someone achieved that feat.
