NIWA's 2020 Annual Climate Summary's revealed last winter was the warmest recorded.
Principal forecaster Chris Brandolino says it meant a lack of snow in the South Island.
He says at the end of August the snow near Aoraki Mount Cook was the shallowest in 10 years.
Overall, the year was the seventh warmest on record.
