International researchers have looked at health records of more than two million New Zealanders, to determine whether mental disorders were linked to developing a chronic physical disease later in life.
They looked at people with substance abuse problems, psychosis, and mood and self harm disorders.
Auckland University Compass Research Centre Director Barry Milne says the results were the same across the board.
He says it didn't matter what mental health problems people were hospitalised for, it raised the risk of a chronic condition.
