New Zealand schools are being urged to change their approach to teaching math

The Ministry of Education has called in an expert panel for advice on how to improve students worrying math results.
A survey's found Kiwi students' math skills in the first year of high school is below all other English-speaking countries.
New Zealand Initiative Executive Director Oliver Hartwich says it's partly down to our child-centred approach.
He says it doesn't work - because we should be prescribing what children should learn - rather than leaving it to them to tell us what they want to do.
