An ambulance was called to the Crowne Plaza about 7.30pm but the 44-year-old ni-Vanuatu died.
He arrived in New Zealand only yesterday afternoon, in a group of 155 seasonal workers from Vanuatu.
Police have notified the next of kin - and support is being offered to everyone at the facility.
MIQ Head Jim Bliss says it's a tragedy for the man's family, and his thoughts are with them.
The death is not deemed Covid related, and has been referred to the Coroner.
