HSBC has launched a 1.99 per cent rate for 12- and 18-month fixed terms - matching Heartland Bank.
It's also loosened criteria and opened it up to households earning more than 125-thousand dollars.
Previously, customers had to borrow a minimum 500-thousand dollars, or have a minimum 100-thousand dollar balance at the bank to qualify for HSBC's special rates.
Heartland launched the country's first mortgage rate below two-percent last October -- at 1.99 percent for one year.
