Maori, Pacifica and Indian babies are more likely to die at childbirth in New Zealand than others

The higher death rate compared with European Kiwi babies has been slammed as unacceptable by the Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee.
Chairman John Tait says baby deaths during pregnancy, or in the first week of their birth, have dropped - but health authorities aren't doing enough.
He says the lack of equal access to health care could have worsened during the Covid 19 response.
New recommendations which have gone to the Health Quality and Safety Commission include a review of a lack of oxygen during pregnancy or birth.
