There's a call for harsher sentences for those convicted of sex abuse

Former Dilworth assistant principal Ian Wilson's been jailed for three years and seven months for indecently assaulting five students between 1975 and 1992.

Advocate for male sex abuse survivors Ken Clearwater says the sentence is too short and sends a message to abuse survivors that they're not respected.

He says the punishment needs to fit the crime.

But Clearwater doesn't think that's what happens for sentences in sex abuse cases in New Zealand.
