Google's announced a mobile software update that turns Android phones into a network of earthquake detectors.
The free system provides near-instant information about local seismic events.
Up until now, it's only been available in parts of the United States.
Otago University Research Associate Professor Caroline Orchiston says it's good to see it being rolled out here.
She says it's been trialled in California by some high profile seismologists, and it's an exciting opportunity for New Zealand.
