Those in trials that are deemed as being conducted for manufacturer benefit, can't claim ACC - if they suffer an injury.
Any who are injured have to go to the group responsible for the trial, for compensation.
But an article published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, shows it took one participant who was left with a disability, more than six years to receive fair reparations.
Endocrinologist Mark Bolland says it's clear changes are necessary.
He says the law needs to change, because volunteers usually take part in an effort to help others.
