A major Australian mining company is determined to establish a green hydrogen plant in Southland.
The Government's released emails showing it's been in talks for a year with Fortescue.
The company has mentioned a 2023 or 2025 start date, although the Tiwai Point Aluminium smelter isn't due to stop production until 2024.
Fortescue's already had meetings with Energy Minister Megan Woods as well as MBIE, conservation and energy officials.
Merdian and Contact Energy have also announced they're looking for partners to create the world's largest green hydrogen plant in Southland.
