A Christchurch pensioner raised the issue - after Burwood Hospital told her it's not their policy to wash clothes for people in the older person's ward.
She's spent 15 hundred dollars over eight months cleaning soiled clothes - for her ex husband - who's had a stroke and is incontinent.
But the Canterbury District Health Board's Kate Lopez says the DHB did not expect families to take home heavily soiled clothes.
She says there's excellent services in sluice rooms for staff to thoroughly rinse clothing.
Anyone unhappy with the service should lodge a formal complaint.
