Men caught smuggling KFC and over $100,000 cash into locked-down Auckland

Under alert level 4 in Auckland's lockdown, restaurants and food delivery services were closed – but that didn't stop these two men from getting their KFC.

New Zealand police have arrested two men attempting to drive into locked-down Auckland with a 'car boot full' of KFC takeaway, and over $100,000 in cash, a police spokesperson said.

"The vehicle was searched and police located the cash, alongside empty ounce bags and a large amount of takeaways," police said on Monday.

Police photos show three buckets of chicken, 10 boxes of coleslaw, four large KFC bags filled with other items, and large amounts of cash.

Police said the two men – aged 23 and 30 – are gang associates, who allegedly did a U-turn and attempted to flee when they saw police at the checkpoint.

The men eventually pulled over and said they had been trying to get into Auckland from Hamilton.

They will appear in court at a later date for breaching a public health order and police said further charges were likely.

At the time of the arrests, Auckland was under alert level 4 – that meant cafes and restaurants were closed and food delivery services such as Uber Eats were not allowed to trade.

Auckland is currently under alert level 3 and ended its four-week lockdown at midnight on Tuesday.
